5 Common iPhone issues & how to fix them
1) iPhone battery won’t charge
If your battery is completely dead, you may see a black screen for a while, even after you plug it in. We recommend you wait at least 10 minutes to see if it will charge. If it fails to do so, unplug your iPhone and check the connector port, ensuring it is free from any debris. Ensure your USB power adapter is plugged in all the way and your power outlet is working. If this still fails, try a different USB cable, USB power adapter or USB port. If everything seems to be working, plug in your iPhone again – this time waiting 30 minutes. Finally, if this still fails, restart your device while it is connected to the power source.
If you receive one of these alerts “This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone” or “This accessory is not supported by this device”, we recommend you double check that you are using an Apple-certified accessory.
2) No service
Firstly, ensure your mobile data is switched on. You can do so by heading to Settings > Mobile. Also make sure your iPhone’s Carrier Settings are up to date by going to Settings > General > About. If there’s one available, you will prompted to update at this point. If you are still unable to get service, we recommend you re-start your iPhone and remove your SIM card to check for any physical damage. If there’s nothing wrong with it, reinsert it and boot your phone up again to see if it works.
3) Crashing applications
For crashing applications, try re-setting your iPhone. To do so hold your home button (the circular button in the bottom centre of your iPhone, below your screen) and the sleep/wake button (on the top edge of your iPhone, on the right-hand side) simultaneously. Continue holding both buttons until your iPhone shuts down and begins to restart – this can take anywhere between 10-20 seconds. Let go of both buttons when you see a silver Apple logo on your screen – this means your iPhone is re-booting, and the reset has completed successfully. If this fails, we recommend you tap and hold the offending app until it goes ‘wobbly’, hit X and delete the app, then head over to the app store and re-install the application. You can also conduct another reset after this step. Then, try your app!
4) Low story capacity
If you’ve gone to take a photo or download a song on your iPhone and received a ‘Not enough storage available‘ message, we recommend checking out your iCloud storage before deleting any data (iCloud is an online storage programme available to all Apple users). For iOS 8, head to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, and for earlier versions of iOS, head to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. You have an initial 5GB free, and once that’s used, you can purchase more space for the following amounts:
50 GB: £0.79
200 GB: £2.49
1 TB: £6.99
This space can be used to back up your photos, calendar events, documents, notes and more without having to delete anything from your iPhone. To add more space to your plan, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Change Storage Plan, and select your desired amount – this will be automatically deducted from the card listed on your iTunes account.
5) Unresponsive or ‘frozen’ screen
Firstly, we recommend switching your iPhone on and off. If this fails a reset may be necessary.
