Apple’s latest launch combines an updated iPhone 18 Pro range with something genuinely different: the company’s first folding phone, the iPhone Duo.
The iPhone 18 Pro develops the established premium iPhone formula with improvements to battery life, performance, connectivity and camera capabilities. The Duo introduces a different format, opening into a larger screen designed for multitasking and mobile working.
They are not direct alternatives for every user. The Pro remains a familiar premium business handset, while the Duo could suit more specialised roles where its larger workspace offers a practical benefit.
Apple has also changed its usual release schedule. The standard iPhone 18 is not arriving alongside the Pro range, giving businesses another factor to consider when planning new mobile contracts and handset choices.
When are the new iPhones being released?
Apple has split this year’s iPhone launch across several dates:
- iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: Available from 18 September 2026
- iPhone Duo: Available from 23 October 2026
- Standard iPhone 18: Expected in spring 2027, reportedly around March
Apple has confirmed the Pro and Duo release dates but has not yet announced a precise date for the standard iPhone 18.
This matters for businesses planning handset renewals. Employees who do not need Pro-level performance may be better served by retaining their current devices for several more months rather than automatically moving to a more expensive model.
iPhone 18 Pro: a refined premium business handset
The iPhone 18 Pro and larger iPhone 18 Pro Max retain the familiar iPhone format.
Although the Pro is not a complete reinvention, its improvements could be valuable for employees who rely heavily on their phone, spend significant time away from a desk or expect to keep the same device throughout a longer business contract.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at £1,199 inc VAT, while the Pro Max starts at £1,299 inc VAT. Both are available with storage ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
Improved battery life for mobile workers
Battery performance is one of the most relevant improvements for business users.
Apple quotes up to 34 hours of video playback for the UK iPhone 18 Pro and up to 43 hours for the UK iPhone 18 Pro Max. The phones can also reach 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes with a suitable wired charger.
Real-world battery life will depend on signal strength, applications and usage. Nevertheless, improved efficiency should benefit employees who spend long days travelling, visiting customers or working away from reliable charging facilities.
The Pro Max may be particularly useful for users who prioritise battery life and screen space but do not require the Duo’s folding design.
A20 Pro performance and improved connectivity
Both Pro models use Apple’s new A20 Pro processor, built using a 2-nanometre manufacturing process.
For ordinary telephone calls, messages and emails, that level of performance may sound excessive. Its value becomes clearer for employees using demanding business applications, editing media, accessing large cloud files, working with AI-assisted tools or keeping a device for several years.
The redesigned cooling system also helps the phone maintain its performance during more demanding tasks rather than slowing down as it becomes warm.
Apple’s new C2 cellular modem is designed to improve connection quality and reliability while reducing power consumption. The phones also support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
Businesses should not upgrade purely because a phone has a faster processor. However, improved efficiency, connectivity and sustained performance can help extend the device’s useful working life.
A more capable camera for business use
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a 48MP main camera with variable aperture. It can adjust automatically to different lighting conditions while also allowing greater manual control.
This could be useful to businesses that regularly create:
- Property and site photography
- Marketing and social-media content
- Product images
- Installation records
- Surveys and inspections
- Evidence of completed work
- Professional video content
The new camera system should deliver better results in difficult lighting and provide more control over focus, depth and exposure.

iPhone Duo: a different kind of business device
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first folding iPhone and will be available in the UK from 23 October 2026.
Closed, it has a compact 5.4-inch outer display. When opened, it provides a 7.6-inch inner display—50% larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The Duo starts at £1,999 inc VAT. Its price will be difficult to justify as a standard company handset, but its larger display and multitasking features could make it valuable for selected roles.
Two business applications side by side
The Duo’s biggest potential business benefit is Split View, which allows two applications to run alongside each other.
A user could, for example:
- Refer to an email while updating a CRM record
- Join a video meeting while viewing shared material
- Compare two documents or web pages
- View a customer account while speaking to them
- Use Maps alongside job or delivery information
- Copy information between Microsoft 365 applications
- Review a quotation alongside product information
Frequently used application pairs can also be saved for quicker access later.
Slack and Zoom are among the third-party applications already adapted for the folding display. As more business applications are optimised, the Duo could provide a useful middle ground between an ordinary phone and carrying a separate tablet.
A more flexible device for video meetings
The Duo can be partially folded and placed on a surface for hands-free video calls without requiring a separate stand.
Zoom can use the larger inner display to show both meeting participants and shared content. This could suit managers, consultants, salespeople and other employees who regularly join meetings while travelling.
It will not replace a laptop for lengthy meetings or detailed document work, but it could make shorter calls and presentations considerably easier from a mobile device.
Apple Pencil support
Apple says the Duo will support the USB-C Apple Pencil later in the year. Users will be able to take notes, annotate documents and sketch on either display.
This could be useful for:
- Field surveys
- Design reviews
- Document approval
- Site inspections
- Customer presentations
- Annotating plans and photographs
Businesses should check whether their essential applications have been properly adapted before purchasing devices specifically for this feature.
Considerations before choosing the Duo
The Duo introduces useful possibilities, but businesses will also need to consider the compromises:
- It starts at £1,999 inc VAT, before accessories.
- Folding displays and hinges introduce additional moving components.
- It uses Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID.
- It is eSIM-only worldwide.
- Specialist protective cases are more expensive.
- Some business applications may take time to fully support the larger display.
- Repair, insurance and replacement costs are likely to be higher.
The Duo should therefore be selected because its folding format solves a genuine working problem—not simply because it is Apple’s newest device.
For the right user, it could potentially replace the need to carry both a phone and a small tablet. For someone who mainly needs calls, email, messaging and standard business applications, it is unlikely to provide enough additional value.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo both support Apple’s latest AI capabilities through iOS 27.
Siri AI can use information from emails, messages, photographs and onscreen content to help users find information and complete tasks. Potential business uses include locating information across applications, summarising content, improving written communication and taking actions based on what is displayed onscreen.
Apple says much of this processing takes place on the device, with Private Cloud Compute used when additional cloud processing is needed.
Siri AI is initially being released as a beta. Businesses should test the new functions carefully and consider their own policies around customer information, confidential documents and company data before allowing unrestricted use.
Where could each iPhone fit within a business?
The iPhone 18 Pro is suited to employees who want a familiar premium handset with strong battery life, excellent performance and advanced camera capabilities.
That could include managers, frequent travellers, content creators, engineers and employees who regularly record site or installation work.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max provides additional screen space and battery life for users who frequently work from their phone but do not need the Duo’s folding format.
The iPhone Duo offers something different. Its larger inner display, side-by-side applications, Apple Pencil support and flexible video-meeting setup could benefit executives, consultants, field professionals and mobile workers who would otherwise carry both a phone and a tablet.
For everyday business users, waiting for the standard iPhone 18—expected in spring 2027—may provide a more cost-effective option.
