For most businesses, mobile coverage has always depended on one
thing: being close enough to a terrestrial mast. That model is beginning
to change.
Direct-to-device satellite technology allows an ordinary compatible
smartphone to connect to satellites when no conventional mobile signal
is available. It will not replace the mobile networks we use every day,
but it could progressively fill some of the gaps that have been
difficult or uneconomical to cover from the ground.
The technology is no longer purely theoretical. O2 has already
launched a satellite-to-mobile service in the UK, while Amazon has
outlined ambitious plans for a much larger future direct-to-device
network. Together, these developments offer a useful glimpse of how
business mobile coverage could evolve over the next few years.
What Is
Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity?
Traditional satellite communications have usually required a
specialist handset, terminal or external antenna. Direct-to-device,
often shortened to D2D, is different: it is designed to connect
compatible everyday smartphones directly to satellites in low Earth
orbit.
When terrestrial coverage disappears, a supported phone can connect
to the satellite service instead. The experience will initially be more
limited than 4G or 5G, but it can maintain essential communication in
locations that would otherwise have no usable signal.
That could be particularly valuable for businesses with people
working in:
- Rural and remote areas
- Agriculture and forestry
- Construction and utilities
- Transport, logistics and field engineering
- Coastal locations and UK waters
- Outdoor events and temporary sites
- Areas affected by a local network outage
It also creates another potential layer of resilience for lone
workers and teams whose work takes them beyond reliable terrestrial
coverage.
Amazon Leo: A
Glimpse of What May Come Next
Amazon Leo has filed plans for a direct-to-device system comprising
up to 5,105 low Earth orbit satellites. Its stated aim is to bring
voice, messaging, data and emergency services to compatible mobile
devices in areas beyond the reach of conventional networks.
Amazon says deployment of the proposed D2D satellites is due to begin
in 2028. The system is intended to work through partnerships with mobile
network operators, complementing their existing infrastructure rather
than replacing them.
The scale of the proposal is significant. Amazon describes potential
business uses including remote worksites, fleet management, supply
chains, disaster response and connected sensors. If delivered as
planned, services of this kind could eventually provide more capable
satellite connections to a much wider range of devices and
locations.
However, Amazon Leo D2D is a future proposal, not a service UK
businesses can buy today. Availability, network partnerships, compatible
devices, performance and pricing will all depend on deployment and
regulatory approval. It is also entirely separate from O2 Satellite,
which uses Starlink Direct to Cell and is already live.
What Does O2 Satellite Offer
Today?
O2 became the first UK network to launch direct-to-device satellite
mobile data connectivity in February 2026. O2 Satellite is powered by
Starlink Direct to Cell and automatically connects a compatible phone
when the normal O2 network is completely unavailable and satellite
coverage is present.
O2 says the service has increased its UK landmass coverage from 89%
to 95%. It works without a separate satellite handset, external antenna
or additional app, although customers need a compatible phone, current
software and the service enabled on their account. Some users may also
require a SIM upgrade.
The service currently provides satellite-backed mobile data for a
defined selection of supported applications, including WhatsApp,
Messenger and mapping services. This means compatible apps may provide
messaging and app-based calling when the connection and application
allow it. O2 has expanded compatibility across selected Samsung, Apple
and Google devices and says further apps and devices will follow.
Voice capability
Traditional mobile voice calls—including standard 999 calls—are not
currently supported over O2 Satellite. WhatsApp and other supported data
applications may provide app-based messaging or calling, but this
depends on satellite connectivity and application compatibility and
should not be treated as guaranteed voice service.
Satellite connectivity also performs best outdoors with a clear view
of the sky, is not available everywhere and may be slower or less
consistent than a terrestrial mobile connection. The service is
presently UK-only.
O2 Satellite should therefore be positioned as a coverage-extension
and essential-connectivity service—not as a guaranteed replacement for
conventional mobile voice or dedicated emergency satellite
communications.
At the time of writing, O2 lists Satellite as a £3-per-month Bolt On
for eligible Pay Monthly customers with a compatible phone, and includes
it with Ultimate plans. Tariffs, availability and compatibility can
change, so these should always be checked for the particular connection
and device.
How Could
Satellite Coverage Help Businesses?
The immediate benefit is not faster mobile data. It is the
possibility of retaining a basic connection in places where the
alternative is no connection at all.
For a field engineer, that could mean sending a message or sharing a
location after travelling outside terrestrial coverage. For a rural
business, it could provide an additional way to communicate when local
infrastructure is unavailable. For a fleet operator, wider geographic
reach could eventually improve the flow of operational and tracking
information.
Over time, greater competition between satellite operators and
partnerships with mobile networks should expand device support, capacity
and the services available. VodafoneThree has also progressed plans for
direct-to-device connectivity in the UK, while Amazon Leo intends to
work with network operators as its system develops. Satellite capability
could therefore become a more normal consideration when businesses
choose networks, handsets and resilience arrangements.
What Satellite
Mobile Coverage Will Not Solve
Satellite should not be treated as a cure for every coverage
problem.
Indoor reception, congested networks, building materials and
localised weak signal will still need to be considered. Satellite
generally requires an open view of the sky and is designed to activate
when terrestrial coverage is unavailable, rather than increase capacity
at a busy office, event or town-centre location.
Businesses will still need to assess:
- The terrestrial coverage of each network at the places people
actually work - Which handsets support the required satellite service
- Whether the necessary apps and functions are compatible
- Indoor and outdoor performance
- Roaming requirements outside the UK
- Broadband, mobile backup and wider continuity arrangements
The best result is likely to come from combining terrestrial mobile
networks, Wi-Fi, fixed connectivity and satellite fallback according to
the needs of individual users.
