Behind the scenes power and efficiency

According to Google's tests on it's flagship Pixel, Android Oreo offers 2x the boot speed when powering up your device. The latest Android OS also offers 'Background limits'. Although many operating systems offer the option to manually minimise background activity, Oreo automatically incorporates background limits. This means it will minimise activity in the apps you use the least, to ensure your device is energy efficient, without you having to lift a finger.

Autofill & Smart text selection

Once again, with efficiency and productivity at the forefront, Google has incorporated the 'Autofill' feature. With your permission, this means your device will be able to remember your logins and provide quicker access to your apps. Smart text selection means Oreo will recognise text when you select or tap, then recommends a next logical step via a suggested app.

Picture-in-Picture

Picture-in-Picture gives you the ability to see two apps or 'windows' at the same time, for example, you could check your calendar to schedule an appointment whilst simultaneously video calling your colleague.

More apps with fewer taps

Oreo features 'Notification dots' this means you can quickly see what's new and easily clear them with a swipe. Android instant apps also means you can head directly into new apps directly from your web browser without the need to go through the installation process.

Google Play Protect

Oreo ensures over 50 billion apps are scanned per day, including those you haven't installed yet, to ensure the Android app store and thus your device and data is safe. 

Compatible devices

All Google devices have been updated to Oreo, these include: Google Pixel 2/2XL, Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X. The Sony Xperia XZ1 and Sony XZ1 Compact also run Android Oreo out the box.

The Oreo update for the Sony XZ Premium, Sony Xperia XZs, OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 is available now.

How to update to Oreo 

  • Firstly, ensure your WiFi is on. You can do so by swiping down from the top of your screen and tapping the WiFi icon. 
  • Head to your Settings. Typically this is a gear shaped icon.
  • Scroll down and tap About Device, usually located at the bottom of the menu. If you're using an Android tablet, you may need to tap the General tab at the top of the screen first.
  • Tap Update. This may read "Software Update" or "System Firmware update" depending on your version of Android.
